    Microstructure and magnetocaloric effect of melt-spun Ni52Mn26Ga22 ribbon

    "Microstructural features and magnetocaloric properties of Ni52Mn26Ga22 melt-spun ribbons were studied. Results show that there are four types of differently oriented variants of seven-layered modulated (7M) martensite at room temperature, being twin-related one another and clustered in colonies. Due to the coupled magnetic and structural transformations between parent austenite and 7M martensite, the melt-spun ribbons exhibit a significant magnetocaloric effect. At an applied magnetic field of 5 T, an absolute maximum value of the isothermal magnetic entropy change of 11.4 J kg(-1) K-1 is achieved with negligible hysteresis losses.

    Direct and indirect measurements of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of Ni0.895Cr0.105MnGe1.05 melt-spun ribbons in high magnetic fields

    We report the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of rapidly solidified Ni0.895Cr0.105MnGe1.05 melt-spun ribbons studied by both direct (adiabatic temperature change) and indirect (isothermal magnetic entropy change) methods in intermediate and high magnetic fields up to 10 T. The maximum values of the adiabatic temperature changes (ΔTad) and magnetic entropy changes (ΔSM) were found to be ∼2.6 K (µoH = 10 T) and 4.4 J kg−1 K−1 (µoΔH = 5 T), respectively, near the Curie temperature (TC). The ΔTad curves and magnetization isotherms were found to be completely reversible, which indicates the high degree of reversibility of the MCEs in this system. A large temperature span (of about 61 K) and a non-saturating behavior of ΔTad were observed at magnetic fields up to 10 T. The adiabatic temperature change was found to be a linear function of (µoH)2/3 near TC, in accordance with the Landau theory of phase transitions

    High-magnetic field characterization of magnetocaloric effect in FeZrB(Cu) amorphous ribbons

    "The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of a series of Fe-rich FeZrB(Cu) amorphous ribbons were investigated under magnetic field values up to mu H-0 of 8 T. A correlation between the saturation magnetization and the maximum magnetic entropy change vertical bar Delta S-M(peak)vertical bar is clearly evidenced. Although these metallic glasses show relatively low vertical bar Delta S-M(peak)vertical bar values (from 3.6 to 4.4 J kg(-1) K-1 for mu(0)Delta H - 8 T), the Delta S-M(T) curve broadens upon the increase in mu(0)Delta H, giving rise to a large refrigerant capacity RC (above 900 J kg(-1) for mu(0)Delta H-8 T). Using the universal curve method for rescaling the Delta S-M(T, mu(0)Delta H) curves, we found a collapse of the curves around the Curie temperature. However, in the low-temperature range the curves do not match into a single one due to the existence of magnetic frustration.

    Riding out of the storm: How to deal with the complexity of grid and cloud management

    Over the last decade, Grid computing paved the way for a new level of large scale distributed systems. This infrastructure made it possible to securely and reliably take advantage of widely separated computational resources that are part of several different organizations. Resources can be incorporated to the Grid, building a theoretical virtual supercomputer. In time, cloud computing emerged as a new type of large scale distributed system, inheriting and expanding the expertise and knowledge that have been obtained so far. Some of the main characteristics of Grids naturally evolved into clouds, others were modified and adapted and others were simply discarded or postponed. Regardless of these technical specifics, both Grids and clouds together can be considered as one of the most important advances in large scale distributed computing of the past ten years; however, this step in distributed computing has came along with a completely new level of complexity. Grid and cloud management mechanisms play a key role, and correct analysis and understanding of the system behavior are needed. Large scale distributed systems must be able to self-manage, incorporating autonomic features capable of controlling and optimizing all resources and services. Traditional distributed computing management mechanisms analyze each resource separately and adjust specific parameters of each one of them. When trying to adapt the same procedures to Grid and cloud computing, the vast complexity of these systems can make this task extremely complicated. But large scale distributed systems complexity could only be a matter of perspective. It could be possible to understand the Grid or cloud behavior as a single entity, instead of a set of resources. This abstraction could provide a different understanding of the system, describing large scale behavior and global events that probably would not be detected analyzing each resource separately. In this work we define a theoretical framework that combines both ideas, multiple resources and single entity, to develop large scale distributed systems management techniques aimed at system performance optimization, increased dependability and Quality of Service (QoS). The resulting synergy could be the key 350 J. Montes et al. to address the most important difficulties of Grid and cloud management

    Obesity and asthma: an association modified by age

    [Abstract] Background. Some studies indicate some causal relationship between obesity and asthma, while others show inconsistent results. Our objective was to evaluate the prevalence of asthma according to obesity in children. Methods. A cross-sectional study, following the ISAAC study methodology, was conducted on two randomly selected groups consisting of 6–7 year-old children (n = 7485) and 13–14 year-old adolescents (n = 8496). The asthma symptoms and potential risk factors were determined from the questionnaire. Overweight and obesity were defined based on the body mass index. Multiple logistic regression was used to obtain adjusted prevalence odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. Results. Obesity was associated with an increase in wheezing ever (OR: 1.35) and exercise-induced asthma (OR: 1.62) in the 6–7 year-old group. No significant relationship was observed in the adolescent population. Conclusion. Obesity was associated with a higher prevalence of asthma in young children, but not in adolescents

    Cross‐sectional study about impact of parental smoking on rhinitis symptoms in children

    [Abstract] Objective. Assess the prevalence of rhinitis and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) of children in our community and its relationship with symptoms of rhinitis Methods (design, setting, participants, main outcome measures). Cross‐sectional study using questionnaire on rhinitis of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood, in children (6‐7 years) and adolescents (13‐14 years). Categories: “rhinitis ever”, “recent rhinitis”, “recent rhinoconjunctivitis”, “severe rhinoconjunctivitis”. Parental smoking: (i) neither parent smokes; (ii) only the mother smokes; (iii) only the father smokes; and (iv) both parents smoke. Odds ratio of the prevalence of symptoms of rhinitis according to ETS exposure was calculated using logistic regression. Results. 10 690 children and 10 730 adolescents. The prevalence of “rhinitis ever” in children: 29.4%, “recent rhinitis” 24%, “recent rhinoconjunctivitis” 11.5% and “severe rhinoconjunctivitis” 0.1%. In adolescents: 46.2%, 34.5%, 16.2% and 0.2%, respectively. Environmental tobacco smoke exposure in the home occurred in 51% of cases. Parental smoking was associated with a higher prevalence of forms of rhinitis in adolescents when only the mother was a smoker. In children when both parents were smokers. Conclusion. Rhinitis is highly prevalent in our community. Environmental tobacco smoke exposure is still very common. The relationship between ETS and rhinitis symptoms in children of this community is not as robust as that found for asthma

    Intervención Educativa para mejorar la calidad del Diagnóstico de la Malaria en la red de Laboratorios de Luanda, República de Angola

    Introducción: La malaria continúa siendo uno de los más importantes problemas de salud  pública a nivel mundial que afecta con énfasis al continente africano y a Angola. Objetivos: Evaluar el nivel de conocimientos teóricos y prácticos en el diagnóstico de la malaria de un grupo de técnicos en Luanda antes y después de una intervención educativa. Material y Métodos: Entre abril y julio de 2013 se realizó un estudio experimental con grupo de control en 120 técnicos de la red de salud de Luanda; se hicieron dos evaluaciones teóricas y prácticas: una, al comienzo y otra, 3 meses después de una intervención educativa. Se incluyó un grupo adicional de control de 120 técnicos que fueron evaluados al mismo tiempo y en quienes no se hizo intervención. Los entrenamientos fueron de 10  días cumplimentando un programa de clases prácticas y teóricas. Resultados: Después de los entrenamientos en el grupo de Intervención, las notas ascendieron tras la segunda evaluación; mientras que en el grupo de control las calificaciones se mantuvieron sin cambios. Se observó que en el grupo de Intervención la probabilidad de estar desaprobado fue 129 veces mayor en la evaluación inicial para las pruebas teóricas y 108 veces mayor en los exámenes prácticos. Finalmente fueron identificados los principales aspectos en que fallaron los técnicos evaluados en los grupos de intervención y control. Conclusiones: Se demostró una mejoría en los conocimientos teóricos y prácticos de los técnicos de laboratorio dedicados al diagnóstico de la malaria después de la intervención educativa.Palabras clave: Malaria, conocimientos teóricos, evaluación práctica, diagnóstico microscópico.ABSTRACTIntroduction: The malaria still is one of the most important public health problems worldwide, specially the Africa as well as in Angola. Objectives: The aim was to evaluate the level of theoretical and practical knowledge in malaria diagnosis of a large group of technicians in Luanda before and after of an educational intervention. Material and Methods: Between April and July of 2013 an experimental study with a control group was carried out in 120 technicians from Luanda. The evaluations were applied previous and after (three months) of an educational intervention.  Another additional group of 120 technicians (control group) were evaluated too at the same period of time, but intervention was not made on them. Trainings were made during 10 days by completing a program with practical and theoretical classes. Results: after the trainings in the intervention group the scores increased in the theoretical and practical evaluations; while in the control group the scores of evaluations did not change after final evaluations. In the Intervention group the rate of disapproval was 129 times higher in the first evaluation than in final evaluation and this odd was 108 times higher in practical evaluations. Finally, the main topics with errors were identified in the evaluations from the beginning in the intervention and the control groups. Conclusions: In this study carried out in Luanda, Angola, an improvement of the evaluations was showed in theoretical and practical knowledge of the technicians after intervention in the network of laboratories of the capital province of the country.Keywords: Malaria, practical evaluation, theoretical knowledge, microscopic diagnosis.     Lethal iron deprivation induced by non-neutralizing antibodies targeting transferrin receptor 1 in malignant B cells

    A number of antibodies have been developed that induce lethal iron deprivation (LID) by targeting the transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1/CD71) and either neutralizing transferrin (Tf) binding, blocking internalization of the receptor and/or inducing its degradation. We have developed recombinant antibodies targeting human TfR1 (ch128.1 and ch128.1Av), which induce receptor degradation and are cytotoxic to certain malignant B-cells. We now show that internalization of TfR1 bound to these antibodies can lead to its sequestration and degradation, as well as reduced Tf uptake, and the induction of a transcriptional response consistent with iron deprivation, which is mediated in part by downstream targets of p53. Cells resistant to these antibodies do not sequester and degrade TfR1 after internalization of the antibody/receptor complex, and accordingly maintain their ability to internalize Tf. These findings are expected to facilitate the rational design and clinical use of therapeutic agents targeting iron import via TfR1 in hematopoietic malignancies.Fil: Rodríguez, José A..
